ABOUT
GROUNDWORK MOBILE COUNTY
MISSION & HISTORY.
Groundwork Mobile County's mission is to build local partnerships and projects to create positive environmental and social change that promote healthy communities and enrich youth development.
Groundwork Mobile County was founded in 2017 when Groundwork USA selected Mobile to join its program, becoming the first community in Alabama to become a Groundwork Trust. The launch of GWMC started from a simple conversation between local citizens over a cup of coffee who were concerned with the number of vacant lots and blighted properties located throughout the city and how the City didn’t have the capacity to keep up with these spaces.
A small planning team was formed to figure out how to combat this issue. This group approached various agencies, other non-profits, local organizations, and community partners to gauge their interest in creating a Groundwork Trust in Mobile. Mobile United submitted a letter of interest to Groundwork USA on behalf of the planning team. Groundwork USA came down to Mobile in May 2017 to learn about the community needs and meet various partners.
Based on their feedback, a full proposal was submitted and approved in July 2017. A feasibility study was completed in 2018 to determine the need for a Groundwork Trust in Mobile. Steering committees were devised, and a year of planning took place to determine the needs in the community as well as the need for a Groundwork Trust in Mobile.
In 2019, Groundwork Mobile County was established as a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization.
